Gareth Stockton, Relationship Director

When did you join ABN AMRO?
I joined the Lease business in April 2014, so just two months before we opened our UK Branch.

Where did you come from?
Prior to joining ABN AMRO, I worked for Bank of Scotland for 11 years and Lombard for 5 years, with time spent in both bank and asset finance related positions.

What is your role here at ABN AMRO?
I am a Relationship Director and manage a portfolio of clients and introducers based in the North of England.

What’s the biggest value-add your role brings to clients?
In its simplest form, my role is to lend money to customers, but the nature of our client base and the types of transactions we often get involved with means we are given the opportunity to craft a deal and provide a solution, which makes us less of a commodity and turns the relationship with our clients/introducers into a genuine partnership.

Who do you mainly interact with?
The nature of the role means I interact with a wider variety of parties, for example customers, introducers, suppliers, manufacturers and of course a number of colleagues within the Lease business, such as Risk, Legal, Asset Management, Operations and Sales Support.

What do you enjoy most about your role?
First and foremost – doing the deal and providing a service, both to the customer and the introducer. It’s also more varied than people often think. Whilst my role is primarily sales focussed, an RD also acts as the “first line of defence”, which means we are also here to keep the bank safe, so a good deal of our time is spent on the credit process, documentation, reviews etc. Not every salespersons first love, but things I quite enjoy! I also enjoy the interaction with my colleagues. The role can be as much about project/stakeholder management as it can sales!

Where do you live?
I live in Wigan, not too far from Manchester, with my wife Alison and our three children, Oliver, Samuel and Elliot.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Having three children keeps me occupied, so spare time is hard to come by! I play a bit of piano and guitar, and also have a (maybe not so secret) love of the XBOX. Having three boys helps. I just say “they made me play!”

What is your favourite film?
I watch a lot of films and enjoy many genres so picking a favourite is difficult. I’ll be greedy and have two – Alien and The Shawshank Redemption.

What is your favourite kind of meal?
Anything - people would class me as being an eater! My favourite food is Chinese, although a good beef roast comes a close second.

What was your earliest ambition?
I always wanted to be a singer (cue laughter!) but when I was 18, my mum made me get a “real job” and encouraged me to apply for a role at Capital Bank, which eventually became Bank of Scotland. I managed to somehow get that job and the rest, as they say, is history!
